The casale sits in the countryside outside Vicopisano, a medieval village known for genuinely local dining rather than tourist menus. Almost everything in Tuscany worth a day out is within an hour.

Vicopisano

  • A pleasant 1.6 km walk into the village along a quiet country road.
  • The nearest restaurant is 400 metres from the house.
  • Medieval towers, and a village that has stayed largely undiscovered.
  • Bars, restaurants and everyday shops in the village itself.

Towns and cities

  • Pisa - 20 minutes by car, also reachable by bus from the village or by direct train from Pontedera.
  • Lucca - 30 minutes by car, also reachable by bus from Bientina.
  • Livorno - 35 minutes, for the restaurants and the aquarium.
  • Lajatico - 40 minutes, home of Bocelli's summer concerts.
  • Florence - 50 minutes by car, or a direct train from Pontedera.
  • Volterra and the Bolgheri wine region - 1 hour.
  • Siena and San Gimignano - 75 to 90 minutes.
  • Sandy beaches, including the Vecchiano nature reserve - 30 minutes.

Things to do outdoors

  • Monti Pisani hiking trails, accessible directly from the house.
  • Local 5 km and 10 km running loops.
  • Kayaking on the Arno in Pisa.
  • Rock climbing nearby, and plenty of cycling.
  • Rafting and river trekking at Bagni di Lucca - 1 hour.
  • An aquapark - 1 hour.
